A Casany el fa posar amb un bomb\u00ed com els que duien molts xofers d\u2019aquella \u00e8poca. L\u2019obra, propietat del <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kimbellart.org\/collection\/ap-198409\">Kimbell Art Museum de Fort Worth (Texas)<\/a>, est\u00e0 catalogada actualment com a <em>Portrait of Heriberto Casany<\/em>, per\u00f2 abans al quadre tamb\u00e9 se l\u2019havia conegut com <em>L\u2019home del barret<\/em> o <em>El xofer<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>El cotxe i el barret de xofer son una al\u00b7lusi\u00f3 del pintor a l\u2019empresa familiar dels Casany. S\u2019imagina que en el futur les pintures seran de carrers \u00abamb grans cases, amb sorolls de bocines [&#8230;], amb gent que corra esbogerrada i amb tramvies i metropolitans\u00bb, diu en una carta d\u2019aquella \u00e8poca al seu amic R\u00e0fols. A l\u2019Heribert els cotxes no li devien fer ni fred ni calor, perqu\u00e8 aleshores ja s\u2019havia desent\u00e8s totalment del negoci familiar dels carruatges. Vivia per a l\u2019art. Volia ser ceramista.<\/p>\n<p><em>L\u2019home del barret<\/em> va exposar-se el 1918 a Barcelona i dos anys despr\u00e9s viatjava cap a Par\u00eds. La tela formava part d\u2019una exposici\u00f3, la primera de Joan Mir\u00f3 a l\u2019estranger, que es presentaria a la Galerie La Licorne, una sala a prop dels Camps Elisis. Del quadre no en tornem a tenir not\u00edcies fins el 1928, quan viatja a Brussel\u00b7les amb altres obres del pintor per exhibir-se a la Galerie Le Centaure, una galeria on Ren\u00e9 Magritte havia exposat els seus primers quadres uns anys abans.<\/p>\n<p>Magritte, coetani de Casany i de Mir\u00f3, va pintar molts homes amb bomb\u00ed, desenes d\u2019homes amb bomb\u00ed i abric negre, tots ells id\u00e8ntics i est\u00e0tics com maniquins. Personatges solitaris o acompanyats de llunes, pipes, espelmes o paraig\u00fces. La reiteraci\u00f3 de determinats temes \u00e9s una cosa molt comuna en l\u2019obra de Magritte; els joqueis s\u00f3n un d\u2019aquests temes recurrents. A mitjan anys seixanta, el pintor va abordar un tema enigm\u00e0tic, com la majoria de les seves obres, en un quadre en qu\u00e8 apareix un autom\u00f2bil de principis de segle condu\u00eft per un xofer i que transporta al seient del darrere un senyor amb bomb\u00ed. Damunt del sostre del vehicle avan\u00e7a en paral\u00b7lel un joquei muntant un cavall. Precisament referint-se a aquesta tela, l\u2019artista explica en una carta a un amic seu que quan la pintava s\u2019havia imaginat un autom\u00f2bil amb un volant fet amb cansalada.<\/p>\n<p>Per\u00f2, a banda d\u2019aquesta an\u00e8cdota, d\u2019interpretaci\u00f3 encara m\u00e9s enigm\u00e0tica, i de bombins, joqueis i autom\u00f2bils, Magritte tamb\u00e9 va pintar Ren\u00e9 Gaff\u00e9, el col\u00b7leccionista belga que va comprar el retrat d\u2019Heribert Casany. A Gaff\u00e9 el pinta davant d\u2019un paisatge irreal i pla de color blau mar d\u2019on sobresurt una roca. Polid\u00edssim, elegant com un home de negocis de la City de Londres, clenxinat i amb unes ulleres rodones de muntura met\u00e0l\u00b7lica fina, Gaff\u00e9 sembla impregnat de la freda blavor de la tela.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fmirobcn.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/portrait-de-ren\u00e9-gaff\u00e9_-ren\u00e9-magritte.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"404\" height=\"508\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"peu-foto\"><em>Retrat de Ren\u00e9 Gaff\u00e9<\/em>. Ren\u00e9 Magritte, 1942\u00a0\u00a9 Adagp, Paris, 2019<\/p>\n<p>Uns anys despr\u00e9s d\u2019adquirir el retrat de Casany, Ren\u00e9 Gaff\u00e9 el va vendre al galerista Pierre Matisse, fill del pintor Henri Matisse. El desembre del 1937, Matisse va exhibir la tela en una exposici\u00f3 dedicada a Mir\u00f3 que va organitzar a la seva galeria de Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p>I el quadre va seguir rodant. Dos anys m\u00e9s tard el comprava el rei de la ind\u00fastria de l\u2019autom\u00f2bil, Walter P. Chrysler, que el va conservar fins el 1950. La tela va tornar a canviar de mans encara dues vegades m\u00e9s, fins que finalment, el 1984 \u2014pocs mesos despr\u00e9s de la mort de Mir\u00f3\u2014 va ser adquirida per la fundaci\u00f3 del Kimbell Art Museum de Fort Worth, on s\u2019exhibeix actualment.<\/p>\n<p>La broma que havia comen\u00e7at Mir\u00f3 pintant un autom\u00f2bil en el retrat del fill de l\u2019amo de la Compa\u00f1\u00eda General de Coches y Autom\u00f3viles \u2014el noi que no volia saber res de cavalls ni de cotxes\u2014 l\u2019atzar es va encarregar de continuar-la fins a la seva mort. Primer, que les dues galeries europees on es va exhibir el retrat tinguessin nom de criatura fant\u00e0stica amb ess\u00e8ncia de cavall, l\u2019unicorn i el centaure. M\u00e9s endavant, que Magritte, l\u2019autor de l\u2019enigm\u00e0tic quadre del joquei galopant damunt del cotxe, pint\u00e9s el retrat del col\u00b7leccionista que va comprar el retrat d\u2019Heribert Casany. Despr\u00e9s, que el quadre an\u00e9s a parar a mans d\u2019un fabricant de cotxes.
