Engraving workshop

Workshop in which we will be exploring the technique of monotype printmaking and visiting part of the Joan Miró Collection in the company of the illustrator and printmaker Jana A. Abril.

The workshop will begin with a visit to the Joan Miró Collection to view the Barcelona Series (1939-1944), on which Miró worked during a dark time for Europe, seeking to escape the harsh realities of the era. There will be an introduction to the technique of lithography in order to relate it to the monotype workshop that will follow.

In the second part of the workshop, the illustrator and printmaker Jana A. Abril will show us the basics of the world of printmaking by presenting the monotype. Unlike other printmaking techniques, a monotype is an impression that creates a single unrepeatable print, meaning it is impossible to reproduce the same image over and over again.

We will be working on the monotype using a matrix, which we will remove and press down again, all the while stirring the ink to create unique forms based on unexpected lines, with traces and textures in suspension.

The workshop will help us to understand how the monotype invites us to distance ourselves from the gravitational field and to enter a realm of weightlessness where the result becomes less important and the mistake an added resource for creative purposes. We will explore how to make a series of unique prints, we will seek out hidden textures around us, we will challenge the gravity of precision and we will embrace the beauty of errors and unexpected lines.
