Reincarnations I: fly

In June and July 1978, the Fundació hosted the Paper Bombs exhibition, curated by Joan Brossa, Josep Mañà and Isidre Vallès, to celebrate Joan Miró's 85th birthday. More than an exhibition, the project could have been defined as a paratheatrical spectacle, a solemn, festive rite that sought to retrace the imprint of the dream of touching the sky, of reaching into space. By tracing the history of hot air ballooning - especially its spectacular, celebratory aspect - Brossa, Mañà and Vallès became interested in the act of flying paper bombs because of their link with Catalan popular culture, after observing that the take-off of hot air balloons had often been a central moment in street festivities.

But this tradition came to an end in the mid-20th century when a municipal ban was misinterpreted and their flying was prohibited due to the risk of fire. Almost three decades later, after the end of the Franco dictatorship, Brossa, Mañà and Vallès joined forces to 'reclaim this festive tradition, an expression of community that is confined to solitude without entertainment in the streets or squares, as if missing out on something vital in life.' Paper Bombs is a political and poetic celebration of popular art and community, of fun and utopia. With each balloon, a dream. With each flight, one step closer to the stars.

Season of re-enactments for the Fundació Joan Miró's 50th anniversary

Reincarnations is a programme of re-enactments that invites us to explore the Fundació Joan Miró's fifty-year history through gesture and performativity. Acknowledging that a re-enactment is never a faithful reproduction of the facts, but rather an exercise in translation - in which part of the information is inevitably transformed en route to being embodied - we embrace this concept in the truest sense of it as a medium. We invoke the tradition of re-enactments as a means by which a body can channel gestures that do not belong to it, and as a means by which energy can be reincarnated in a new body by possessing someone who vibrates at a similar frequency.
