Reincarnation IV: To Revive

As part of the Music Evenings season in 2004, Min Tanaka and Derek Bailey performed an improvisation in the Fundació Joan Miró's Sculpture Garden. An improvisation that, as an event, has never been forgotten. Min Tanaka and Derek Bailey performed together irregularly for more than two decades beginning in 1978. But how do we approach what Tanaka and Bailey dubbed 'free improvisation'? 'What I do is not precious,' claimed Derek Bailey.

Twenty years later, on 24 October 2025, Ferran Fages and Carme Torrent will enter into a re-enactment. But re-enacting an improvisation is a paradox in itself, a delightful aporia. It neither seeks to identify nor privilege an original authenticity; it escapes representation. Dances that return, sounds to come, modulations, re-cyclings, re-iterations, while the green re-greens and grows again.

Places Among Memories opens up to the timbres of a fabric of relationships while extracting something new and different from the repetition. Memories Among Places in its constitutive precariousness, perceptual blind spots, lapses of memory, linguistic indeterminacy and muscular tremors, the sounds relocate and divert relationships between relationships.

The re-enactment proposed by Carme Torrent and Ferran Fages therefore seeks to give an account of that which is unique, that which cannot be thematised, objectified, that which cannot be analogised, or that which cannot be reduced to something else.

In collaboration with the Fundació Joan Brossa.
