Ritual Journey in 7 Acts
Seven is a magical number: totality, the search for knowledge, the key to all enigmas. It is also the number of trips that Miró made to the United States and the number of stops that this exhibition tour will feature. They are seven conversations between Joan Miró and Perle Fine, Helen Frankenthaler, Jeanne Reynal, Dorothea Tanning, Alice Trumbull, Janet Sobel and Lee Krasner. The paintings of these artists depict very familiar realities that simultaneously have a universal reach. We will highlight how these women broke norms, shook up 20th-century art and paved the way for abstraction and action painting. They were pioneers and role models, and their work was instrumental in redefining contemporary art.
As Miró said: 'Each painting is a journey, an exploration of the unknown, and an invitation to discover new possibilities.' We will accept this challenge by embarking on a collective journey. The museum's rooms will be transformed into a slightly chaotic setting: jazz by Duke Ellington will be heard; we will organise a pop-up demonstration, complete with shouts and slogans; we will play by answering the questions of an ad hoc quiz; an atavistic, modern dance that has never been seen before will be danced for us; we will hold a raffle in which nobody is likely to end up happy; and reflections will be uttered in a low voice for show
Of course, as can happen to anyone who travels to the United States, the myth of the American Dream will constantly haunt us, making the same old promise, which may not be fulfilled this time either.
