Still, and in spite of it all
The United States that Miró visited up to seven times between 1947 and 1968 brought him institutional recognition, creative effervescence, and a latent connection with exile-whether through the experiences of dear friends or as a haunting possibility never fully realized by himself.
His experience today would have been completely different-or perhaps would not have been at all. The United States of that time were not the panacea one might infer from a hasty comparison with the present; yet today a series of alarming phenomena accumulate and consolidate that are worth observing in common because they are paradigmatic of systemic changes with global reach: political and cultural fascism; a "bro diplomacy"; the contempt for international law; the triangulation between Big Tech, surveillance industry and genocide; the necropolitical regime at borders; or ecocide embedded in an unabashed colonial logic.
Together with seven guest voices, we open a space to explore-and conjure up-the room for manoeuvre that art and art institutions may have amid the ruins of the so-called and biased American dreams, still, and in spite of it all.
