Miró's Airport Mural Granted Landmark Protection
Joan Miró’s ceramic mural at Terminal 2 of Barcelona-El Prat Airport has been granted Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) status, the highest level of heritage protection in Spain. The designation recognises not only its artistic significance but also its long-standing role as a symbolic gateway to the city for millions of travellers.
Created in collaboration with ceramist Josep Llorens Artigas, the mural was conceived in 1968 as a monumental welcome to Barcelona. Spanning 500 square metres and composed of nearly 5,000 ceramic tiles, the work reflects the city’s ambition to project modernity and cultural vitality to the world through public art.
This new protected status ensures the mural’s preservation while reaffirming its place among Miró’s most emblematic public works. Beyond its scale, it remains a living image-one that continues to connect past and present, greeting each new arrival with the creative spirit of the city.
