François Baschet. Musical Sculpture
The opening of François Baschet’s exhibition Musical Sculpture will take place on Thursday 29 March at 7.30 pm in the presence of the artist. This series of forms and objects can be used to make music manually, in other words, without electricity or electronic instruments. The combination of forms and sounds is a subject that has always fascinated artists, and François Baschet is perhaps the artist who has gone furthest in his research, applying his discoveries to the creation of musical sculptures.
Since 1952, François Baschet has been exploring the sources of vibration, resonance and sound projection, always guided by the conviction that the audience’s active participation is essential. This perspective profoundly distinguishes his work from that of Jean Tinguely and Harry Bertoia. He has held several exhibitions in Scandinavian countries and in 1965, the Museum of Modern Art in New York devoted a four-month exhibition to his work. From that time on, Baschet’s musical sculptures have gained worldwide recognition. One of his most recent acts was the twenty-week Learning to Read Through the Arts programme at the Guggenheim Foundation in New York in 1976.
The exhibition Musical Sculpture can be seen at the Fundació Miró until 6 May.
