Antonio Saura: Anthological Exhibition, 1948-1980
The exhibition Antonio Saura: Anthological Exhibition, 1948-1980 will open at the Fundació Joan Miró next 9 July 1980 at 7.30 pm.
This comprehensive show allows us to trace the evolution of this Aragonese painter from the five years before the creation of the El Paso group – of which he was a member and mainstay, together with Manuel Millares – to the present day.
The human being, whom Saura has starkly examined in a number of ways, is the main motif in the context of his work and obviously the central theme of this exhibition, as can be seen in paintings such as Crucifixiones (Crucifixions) (the image of man as victim of man), Retratos de Brigitte Bardot (Portraits of Brigitte Bardot) (woman as object of consumption), Sudarios (Shrouds) (virtual image of the human face with specific magical-religious connotations) and Autorretratos (Self-Portraits) (or self-deformation).
The exhibition is completed by a judicious selection of books – Sauromaquia (unpublished), Los sueños de Quevedo (1971) and La cámara ardiente (1977) – as well as graphic work – Novisaurias (1969), Aphorismen (1973) and Manière (1977).
The works are from private collections, museums and galleries in various European cities and were selected by the artist himself.
