José Guerrero: Anthological Exhibition, 1947-1980

The work of José Guerrero, a Granada-born painter who settled in New York, is currently on display for the first time in Barcelona.

Trained to the highest academic standards, José Guerrero decided to leave Granada in 1944. His initial travels took him to Madrid and Paris. In Madrid, he came into contact with the avant-garde of the time – Palazuelo, Millares, Saura, etc. – and in Paris he had the opportunity to see first-hand the work of Picasso, Miró and Juan Gris. In 1949, he left for the United States, where he personally participated in the development of action painting. Guerrero settled in New York, a city that welcomed him and embraced his work, recognising his merit and the mastery of his craft that is evident in it.

The Fundació Joan Miró is currently offering us the opportunity to follow Guerrero’s career, from his figurative beginnings to his most recent creations, in which colour is combined with complete freedom, a freedom that has always characterised his work.
