Kan Masuda. Landscape of sound (sound sculpture)

Soundscape (sound sculpture) by Kan Masuda

The inauguration of the Soundscape exhibition of sound sculptures by the Japanese artist Kan Masuda will take place next Thursday 6 May 1982 at 7.30 pm.

The sound boxes that Kan Masuda has prepared especially for the occasion hang from the ceiling as if they wanted to remodulate the space. Through the gently rounded shapes of the wooden boxes, the artist has managed to create a restful, calm atmosphere, transforming the Fundació’s own space into a sound box.

This soothing visual surprise is accompanied by an acoustic one. In the same way that a good soundtrack enhances the action of a film, Kan Masuda’s sound sculptures have the ability not only to visually alter the space, but also to place the visitor in another context thanks to the sound produced by them. If smells have the power to evoke a specific situation, sounds are capable of distancing us from our usual environment and placing us in another unreal, hypothetical or imaginary one. Masuda facilitates this sporadic escape for us through the high metallic timbre of Japanese musical instruments and the elemental sounds of Eastern music produced by his sculptures.

Form initially dominated and conditioned sound. Trained visually in the field of sculpture, Masuda knew and mastered woodworking before considering the possibility of managing to incorporate sound into his work. His in-depth study of the relationship between form and sound has led him to his current level of knowledge, thereby helping him to imagine a sound suggested by the form he needs in order to achieve it. Without neglecting aesthetic approaches, he allows form and sound to establish a dialogue in which both are equal participants.

The result of Kan Masuda’s latest research is Soundscape, an installation in which the visual complements the auditory, tempting viewers to participate by producing the sounds that will allow them to use their imagination in order to transport themselves to an exotic context that is completely different from their usual one.

The Soundscape exhibition will run until 12 June 1982.
