Exhibition: Modernista Stained Glass Windows
Venue: Fundació Joan Miró, Montjuïc Park
Opening: Wednesday 25 April at 7.30 pm
Modernista stained glass windows are the result of a particular moment in the history of Catalonia. Collected from their ‘natural museum’ – primarily the Eixample district of Barcelona – they are now housed by the architecture of Josep Lluís Sert at the Fundació Joan Miró, where the public can admire the quality and beauty of an unrepeatable body of work.
The exhibition Modernista Stained Glass Windows begins in pre-Modernisme, with the work of Buxeres i Codorniu and Josep Pujol, before continuing its journey towards the beginning of Modernisme, with the 1888 Universal Exposition. It also covers its culmination, with the appearance of Rigalt and Granell’s light and transparency at the Palau de la Música Catalana and the mastery of artists dedicated to the art of stained glass, such as Alexandre de Riquer, Joan Brull, Pau Roig and Ludwig Dietrich, and it concludes with Noucentista classicism and the opening towards a new sensibility.
Moreover, it presents the stained glass production of the painter Joaquim Mir, with a work that is on a par with his best paintings. Also on display are the stained-glass windows produced in 1904 by Antoni Gaudí for Mallorca Cathedral, exhibited for the first time and made in collaboration with Iu Pascual and Torres Garcia.
Offering a broad overview of Catalan stained glass, the exhibition has been organised by the Plastic Arts Service of the Government of Catalonia’s Department of Culture in conjunction with the Fundació Joan Miró. The show will run until 27 May.
