Joan Miró International Drawing Prize
25th Edition, 1986
On 9 July, the Fundació Joan Miró awarded the 25th Joan Miró International Drawing Prize, 1986.
The jury – comprising Anna Bofill, Lourdes Cirlot, Josep Corredor Matheos, Joan Hernández Pijuan, Rosa Maria Malet, Francesc Miralles and Mercè Vidal – with Lluís Bosch i Cruañas acting as secretary, granted the first prize to a drawing by Juan Francisco Martínez Urrios from Barcelona. Four honourable mentions were also awarded to works by Robert Schad (Federal Republic of Germany, 1st mention), Jeffrey Gunn (United States, 2nd mention), Antonio Ángel González (Badajoz, 3rd mention) and Norman Narotzky (Barcelona, 4th mention).
As in recent years, the Fundació Joan Miró will present a Joan Miró lithograph as the first prize. The winner will also receive a silver medal, while the four artists awarded mentions will each receive a bronze medal.
With this 1986 edition, the prize reaches its 25th anniversary. A total of 814 artists participated, of whom 294 were selected for the exhibition, alongside 41 invited works shown out of competition.
The selected works – all contemporary and previously unpublished – showcase a broad range of artistic approaches and styles, from figurative drawing, pencil work and collages, to oriental watercolours, textured compositions, vibrant colour studies and pieces incorporating photographic techniques. Together, they offer a compelling overview of the current landscape of drawing. Alongside Spanish artists, the exhibition includes participants from the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, France, Ireland, Austria, Poland, Czechoslovakia, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Japan and China, among many others.
The exhibition of selected drawings from the 25th Joan Miró International Drawing Prize 1986 opens to the public on 10 July and will remain on view until the end of September in Espai 10 and Espai 11 at the Fundació Joan Miró. Barcelona, 10 July 1986.
