Miralda: Honeymoon Project. Pre-wedding: Bridal Bouquet, Bridal Veil, Love Letters
PRE-WEDDING
Bridal Bouquet, Bridal Veil and Columbus-Liberty Love Letters are Miralda’s three most recent works in his Honeymoon project, which began in New York in 1986. The project consists of a symbolic marriage between the Statue of Liberty in New York and the Columbus Monument in Barcelona, as a metaphor for the union of two cultures, two worlds looking at each other across the ocean. Honeymoon is based on the progression of a series of acts and ceremonies typical of any wedding, featuring these monuments as the protagonists. Part of an extensive ritual calendar that lasts six years, two acts have already been celebrated: the proposal ceremony, including the dress and engagement ring (TV ring), and the inaugural presentation of the first two trousseau gifts: petticoats and stockings.
Bridal Bouquet
Due to the symbolic representation of Mediterranean culture embodied by the olive tree, consecrated to divinities by different civilisations, it has become the ‘bridal bouquet’ because of its location in the Fundació Joan Miró and its size.
Dimensions: 8 × 6 × 4 m.
Materials: white artificial flowers, ribbons, tulle, baubles and mirrors.
Bridal Veil
The symbolic function of the veil is to protect the bride during the moments before the ceremony. It also exorcises any evil eye that might threaten her purity on her way to the altar.
Dimensions: 95 m high × 60 m wide.
With a codfish silhouette.
Materials: lilac, pink, red, dark and light blue tulle.
Printed with mother-of-pearl flocking.
Columbus-Liberty Love Letters
The letters presented in the Pre-wedding exhibition represent a selection of the 2,000 that have been received since November 1987, when a TV programme invited members of the public to send their letters.
Events planned during the exhibition
12, 13, 14 and 15 May: reception of money boxes/cans.
The author will sign the drawing that they contain.
2 June: presentation of the selected letter and finalists. Prize-giving ceremony on board the Santa Maria caravel in the port of Barcelona.
