Bruno Bolze: La presència de l’absència (The Presence of Absence)
Espai 13 – Fundació Joan Miró
13 December 1988–22 January 1989
On Tuesday, 13 December at 8.30 p.m., the Fundació Joan Miró will unveil La presència de l’absència, an exhibition of paintings by French artist Bruno Bolze at Espai 13.
Bruno Bolze is an artist whose work is engaged with materiality. Whether in painting or sculpture, his art conveys a strong sense of spatial awareness, aligning him to some extent with the minimalist movement. “Minimalist”, he explains, “only in the sense that the economy of means inspires me in the creation of my work.” Drawn to Romanesque art, Bolze seeks out the purest forms, distilling elements to their essence.
His paintings, polyptychs and vertically arranged wooden panels – some covered in dyed fabric, others coated in lead or tin – are characterised by a careful balance of format, material and colour. Bolze considers colour the foundation of painting and confesses to feeling an uncontrollable pleasure in using it. More broadly, his work finds equilibrium between architectural form and a profoundly pictorial sensibility.
This balance is also reflected in the presence and absence of his lead and tin panels, which he refers to as columns. The spaces between these columns act as links, shaping a unified whole rich in contrasts. Embracing a constant duality, Bolze’s work consistently leans towards symmetry and harmony.
This exhibition at Espai 13, Fundació Joan Miró – the artist’s first solo show – brings together around ten works, all created in 1988. Bolze will be in Barcelona from 11 to 18 December to oversee the installation and attend the opening.
