Press Release
Exhibition: 109 llibres amb Joan Miró (109 Books with Joan Miró)
30 November 1989–28 January 1990
On Thursday, 30 November at 7.30 p.m., the Fundació Joan Miró will open the exhibition 109 llibres amb Joan Miró and present its Honorary Award, L’Ocell Solar. This year’s recipients are Joan Teixidor, who served as president of the Fundació Joan Miró when it first opened to the public, and Gérald Cramer, gallerist, publisher and close friend of Joan Miró.
The event will be presided over by the President of the Generalitat Government of Catalonia, the Honourable Jordi Pujol. Also in attendance will be the Mayor of Barcelona, the Honourable Pasqual Maragall, as well as Joan Miró’s daughter, other family members, and several writers and poets who collaborated with Miró on some of the books featured in the exhibition.
A press preview will take place on the same day at 12.30 p.m.
The exhibition is centred around a carefully curated selection of 109 artist’s books that Joan Miró created between 1927 – when he produced his first book illustration (Gertrudis by J. V. Foix) – and 1981, when he completed Lapidari, based on anonymous 15th-century texts selected and introduced by Pere Gimferrer. The display excludes book covers, catalogues and periodicals.
Showcasing one of the most personal aspects of Miró’s creative practice, this is the most comprehensive and in-depth exhibition of his work in this field to date, both in terms of the number of books and illustrations on display. The selection includes books Miró illustrated for poet and writer friends, notably members of the Surrealist movement, as well as books featuring his own texts, such as Le lézard aux plumes d’or (The Lizard with Golden Feathers) and L’Enfance d’Ubu (Childhood of Ubu). Also on display are books he illustrated for classical works, including Le courtisan grotesque (The Grotesque Courtier) by Adrien de Monluc and Càntic del Sol (Canticle of the Sun) by Saint Francis of Assisi. |
