Press Release Espai 13 500 anys de genocidi (500 Years of Genocide) Robert Sanchez – Guillermo Gómez-Peña 13 June–14 July 1991 500 anys de genocidi is an installation by artists Robert Sanchez and Guillermo Gómez-Peña, following on from Chéri Samba’s condemnation within the Formes de dissensió (Forms of Dissent) series, organised by the Fundació at Espai 13. Also framed as a protest, this project by the San Diego/Tijuana-based artists delivers a message from the US-Mexico border – one that honours the memory of Indigenous cultures while contributing to the evolution of border culture. But what does border culture mean? In the artists’ own words, it stands for “boycott, conspiracy, inequality, clandestinity, smuggling” but also “bilingual poetry, audio-graffiti, punkarachi, vídeo corrido, antibolero [hybrid styles blending punk, mariachi, video storytelling and Latin American music], anti-everything – in other words, the practice of creative appropriation, expropriation and the subversion of dominant cultural forms.” This fusion of elements takes shape in a strikingly enigmatic installation at Espai 13. A large black-and-white map painted on the floor, handwritten political texts on the walls and concealed hypnotic sounds serve as the most evident markers of this manifesto-installation, on display at the Fundació Joan Miró until 14 July. Robert Sanchez will be at the Fundació from 10 June.
