Wols. Photographs, watercolours and gravures

Dates
Press Release Wols 27 June–15 September 1991 From 27 June to 15 September, the Fundació Joan Miró will host an exhibition dedicated to the German artist Wols. Organised in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut Barcelona and the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, the exhibition will feature a selection of 40 photographs, 11 watercolours, 33 etchings and two illustrated books. Situated historically between Surrealism and Fantastic Expressionism, Otto Alfred Wolfgang Schulze – better known as Wols – belonged to a generation of artists profoundly shaped by the consequences of the Second World War. Born in Berlin in 1913, he studied at the Bauhaus, where he met Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and Moholy-Nagy. However, his artistic trajectory was defined above all by his time in Paris during the 1930s, where he lived among artists such as Miró, Ernst, Picasso and Masson. In Paris, Wols began working as a photographer. His highly personal approach to the medium and distinctive vision of reality brought him close to a form of magical realism more often associated with painting. His drawings and watercolours make the world of the fantastic even more tangible, revealing the influence of artists such as Klee, Kokoschka and Tanguy. The exhibition will remain open until 15 September and will be presented to the media on 27 June at 12.30 p.m. Opening: 27 June at 7.30 p.m.
