Press Release Espai 13 Comunicacions. El vigor de l’efímer (Communications. The Strength of the Ephemeral) series Manuel Saiz: Círculo de virtuosos (el mundo perfectamente vacío) (The Virtuous Circle (The Perfectly Empty World)) 19 December 1991–26 January 1992 On Thursday 19 December at 7.30 p.m, the Fundació Joan Miró will open the exhibition Círculos virtuosos (el mundo perfectamente vacío) by Manuel Saiz at Espai 13, as part of the exhibition series Comunicacions. El vigor de l’efímer, curated by Frederic Montornés. Born in Logroño in 1961, Manuel Saiz has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 1985 (Salón de los 16, Madrid; Punto’87, Madrid; I Joan Miró Drawing Triennial, Barcelona; Punto’90, Madrid, etc.), demonstrating not only a strong aesthetic and moral sensibility but also a sense of authenticity. Saiz does what he thinks, thinks what he believes and believes that art has trapped itself in a cycle, where the very effort to escape emptiness and monotony only draws it back in, as if pulled by a centripetal force. For his installation at Espai 13, the artist has constructed an exposed brick wall nearly three metres high, cutting diagonally across the gallery. Two doors open in the same direction, forming a closed circuit. One enters to exit, only to re-enter and attempt yet again to escape the void – only to be drawn back in, going around so many times that, eventually, the original purpose is lost. Just like in art, in life, in everything. The exhibition will be open until 26 January 1992.
