Moving Images – Electronic Art
An exhibition presented under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg.
The exhibition is the first of its kind to present new media art on such a large scale. Presented in Barcelona to coincide with the Olympic Games, it has been conceived and organised jointly by the Fundació Joan Miró and Karlsruhe’s Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), which has lent all the works in the exhibition.
On the ground floor of the Fundació Joan Miró, around thirty works, some of them large-scale, by eighteen world-famous artists will be on display in an area measuring some 1,500 m2. This will be the first time that the ZKM’s collection of contemporary art has been presented to the public. Never before has a public collection shown such a broad spectrum of the latest developments and trends in audiovisual art, from electronic objects and holograms to video montages, audiovisual sculptures and interactive computer-controlled installations.
The works that have been chosen document not only the diversity of forms, but also the pluralism of styles and content so characteristic of the visual arts. In them, the autonomy of pure form goes hand in hand with an arbitrary theme, abstraction coexists with narrative, the most dizzying and frenetic concept clashes with a calm, meditative sequence of images. And yet, from the beginning to the end of the exhibition, the common thread is a reflection on the human image. Themes such as Noah’s Ark, Caryatids, Portal, City, Sea, Fire, Conflict, Nude, Dance, Faith, Fear or East and West cover fundamental and highly topical issues of our time. Each of the participating artists offers us his or her own contribution in a language that is unique to all of them, expressed through audiovisual and electronic techniques.
