Espai 13
Opening of the exhibition Fluidos discontinuos (Discontinuous Fluids), by Jesús Martínez Oliva, as part of the Sense títol (Untitled) series, curated by Frederic Montornés
Thursday 3 February 1994 at 7.30 p.m.
On Thursday 3 February at 7.30 p.m., Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró will open Fluidos discontinuos, a solo exhibition by Jesús Martínez Oliva.
Referencing the fragmented nature of human relationships today, Jesús Martínez Oliva has conceived an installation that divides the exhibition space into two areas – one private, the other public. However, his intention is to invert traditional notions of public and private in the context of intimacy.
At the far end of the space, the private room – a recurring element in Martínez Oliva’s work – has walls covered in erotic phone numbers, from which three constantly moving machines release magnetic tape, tracing patterns on the walls. On the other side of the partition, the intimate sounds of erotic voices transform a typically private experience into a public one, reinforced by the presence of an organic form made of electrical cables.
Eroticism here serves as a pretext to explore disconnection, isolation and the standardisation and trivialisation of human relationships. With this exhibition, Martínez Oliva also addresses themes of promiscuity, casual sex, AIDS and the ongoing social marginalisation of the disease.
The exhibition in Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró will run until 13 March 1994. |
