Tere Recarens: Et cauran les dents (Your Teeth Will Fall Out)

On Thursday 17 March at 7.30 p.m., artist Tere Recarens will present her exhibition Et cauran les dents (Your Teeth Will Fall Out) in Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró. With clarity and simplicity, and without resorting to conceptual rhetoric or ambiguity, the artist explores the theme of lying.
A towering wooden Pinocchio with an 18-metre-long nose, surrounded by oversized sweets that visitors can take away, serves as the first prompt for reflection on truth and deception. Pinocchio – the childhood symbol of dishonesty – and the sweets as bait, each one wrapped with a printed truth (or lie?), conceal bars of soap beneath their wrappers. Then there is the ultimate paradox, embedded in the exhibition’s title: “If you tell lies, your teeth will fall out.” All these elements come together in an installation conceived specifically for Espai 13.
To conclude, and to encourage reflection on the words we speak, the artist has incorporated a delayed audio playback system. This setup replays each visitor’s voice twice, giving them the chance to reconsider what they have just said – perhaps spoken too hastily, or perhaps not entirely truthfully.
