Espai 13 – Closing of the series

On Thursday 5 May at 7.30 p.m., the exhibition Corpus delicti will open in Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró. This exhibition marks the conclusion of the three-year series Sense títol, that has brought together 15 solo exhibitions by 15 different artists, all presented in Espai 13 under the curatorship of Frederic Montornés. Corpus delicti reflects both the work of these artists – whose exhibitions have shaped the programme over the past three years – and the curatorial approach of Espai 13, as well as the coherence of Montornés’ vision throughout his selection of projects.
The first series Comunicacions. El vigor de l’efímer (Communications. The Strength of the Ephemeral, 1991–92), focused on the dialogue between the artist and the viewer. The second, Bloc de fragments (Notebook of Fragments), placed emphasis on the artwork as the materialisation of a “fragment” of the artist’s life. The third series, Sense títol (Untitled, 1993–94), has been dedicated to the curator himself, conceived as a kind of personal manifesto that, exhibition by exhibition, reveals his motivations and artistic interests.
From the outset, each exhibition has left an imprint on the space. For this final show, which brings to a close three years of work, the curator has decided to present a collection of these imprints – traces or tattoos impressed upon the body of Espai 13 – now laid bare for the public, who will observe, analyse and, ultimately, pass judgement. This is why the exhibition bears the title Corpus delicti. The “body of evidence” is composed of all the elements that, over the past three years, have allowed the audience to form their own opinions about the artists’ proposals, the curator’s work and the direction of Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró. Sense títol has been a series in which Frederic Montornés has engaged in an honest and direct tête-à-tête with the public through the projects he has presented. This face-to-face exchange culminates in Corpus delicti, where the 15 participating artists bear witness to the process, and where Montornés himself conducts an interview with himself – playing the role of prosecutor, scrutinising his own curatorial decisions. The final verdict, however, is left to critics and the wider public.
The artists featured in this group exhibition are: Ana Laura Aláez, Esther Baulida, Jårg Geismar, Susy Gómez, André Jasinski, Jesús Martínez Oliva, Alberto Peral, Esther Rovira, Tere Recarens, Serafín Rodríguez, Manuel Saiz, Idroj Sanicne, Montserrat Soto, Mitja Tusek and Paco Vacas.
To mark the closing of Sense títol, a catalogue has been published compiling all the exhibitions presented throughout the year.
