Press Release Espai 13 – Balcons (Balconies) series, curated by Mónica Regàs Rosa Vázquez, Ruido (Noise) Opening: Thursday, 15 December at 7.30 p.m. The young Galician painter Rosa Vázquez, who studied Fine Arts in Barcelona, presents the second exhibition in the Balcons series in Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró, curated by Mónica Regàs. The exhibition, titled Ruido – written, as the artist points out, in Galician – is a painting-based project in which brushstrokes materialise sounds within space and time. In Ruido, as in much of Rosa Vázquez’s work, writing – or more specifically, letters – acts as a coded representation of a culture that speaks of sound and noise. Painting, like music, consists of sounds, gaps and silences, but rather than focusing on the sounds themselves, Ruido explores the spontaneous, subjective relationships that form between sounds and images. This synesthetic effect is evident in the transcription of certain Galician words and phrases, such as ruído (‘noise’), experiencia a encher (‘experience to fill’) and valeiro (‘emptiness’). For the artist, these words evoke images and perceptions tied to specific auditory stimuli. Painted directly onto the walls of Espai 13 in fresco or rendered in oil and varnish on paper, they offer visitors an insight into the artist’s auditory perception at a given moment in time. These transcribed soundscapes, or amplified auditory disturbances, gradually take over the walls of Espai 13, surrounding visitors and prompting them to engage in self-reflection. In this sense, Espai 13 becomes a kind of balcony from which the viewer is invited to observe their own introspection. The exhibition Ruido will run in Espai 13 at the Fundació Joan Miró until 15 January 1995.
