David Tremlett: Wall Drawings

The Fundació Joan Miró will present an exhibition by the English artist David Tremlett beginning on 30 November 1995. This is a co-production project between the Carré d’Art – Musée d’art contemporain in Nîmes and the Fundació Joan Miró in Barcelona.

The exhibition is divided into two parts: a documentary collection of nearly forty works created between 1970 and 1995 and a work designed specifically for the Fundació, consisting of four wall drawings created in situ in the Fundació’s spaces.

Like several artists of his generation, David Tremlett’s production is rooted in his refusal to join an artistic tradition that he fancies to be too academic, whether in the field of painting or sculpture. Far from being anecdotal and ephemeral, this refusal would become a determining and lasting orientation in his work, which is structured around two main elements: the first lies in the journey and all that this can imply (distance from one’s own country, displacements, discoveries, new relationships, etc.), while the second is constituted by a desire not to produce works that fall into a precise artistic category (paintings, sculptures, photographs), but instead to interpenetrate them and create landscapes with words, sculptures with pigments, architectures with lines, and so on. Hence the exclusive use of materials thought to be minor, such as pastels, pencil, paper, etc. Hence too the development, since 1976, of monumental yet ephemeral compositions painted directly on the walls of exhibition spaces.

David Tremlett will be in Barcelona from Monday 13 November to work directly on the walls of the Fundació’s spaces. To arrange interviews or follow the artist’s work process, please contact Anna Noëlle by calling 329 19 08.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated, two-hundred-page catalogue that will include all of David Tremlett’s wall drawings produced since 1969.
