Born in Puerto Rico in 1974, Ignacio Lang lived in California for many years but has been back on the island for the past six months. Like other artists in this series, his life and work move between two very different worlds: the metropolis and Puerto Rico.
Lang’s project is a reflection on the phenomena that unfold within a specific geographical and cultural territory – in this case, Puerto Rico – and our relationship with it. Latitude, light, heat, natural wealth and elemental forces form part of our identity, yet in Puerto Rico, these signals intersect and become blurred.
Buscando una señal (Searching for a Signal) consists of three works: Pescando señales (Fishing for Signals), Blau (Blue) and Coriolis Force. In Pescando señales, Lang attempts to fish for signals using an antenna placed in an isolated area. The signals are transmitted to a computer, which processes them and reveals a high level of informational pollution. In Coriolis Force, referencing the 19th-century French mathematician who studied the movement of objects in relation to the Earth’s rotation, Lang metaphorically uses the sound of a reversed record to evoke the island’s wind currents. Meanwhile, in Blau, he explores the concept of the horizon and the asymmetrical nature of vision.
Through these images, charged with poetic intensity, Ignacio Lang seeks to create a state of confusion that simultaneously heightens awareness, prompting the audience to question the phenomena that shape our sense of identity. |
