Chiho Aoshima
Terror and Seduction

Chiho Aoshima (Tokyo, 1974) is a tall, silent and mysterious artist who enjoys wandering among ruins and cemeteries. Her works, created with digital precision and striking acid colours, take the viewer into a dreamlike and astonishing world. Aoshima’s universe is populated by girls, insects and reptiles, oscillating between nightmare and anguish. The characters move through cityscapes, underwater worlds, forests or cemeteries, torn between childhood fairytales and the violence of reality, while revealing the deep discontent of youth reluctant to face adulthood.

The buildings in her cities become disturbing, ghostly silhouettes; the branches of a cherry tree in bloom emerge from a decaying skull; bodies of beautiful, blood-stained girls are sucked up by a swirling vortex of bright colours. In Chiho Aoshima’s works, seduction borders on terror, beauty confronts the repulsive. The shadow of war, the threat of ecological disaster, accidents, death and dismembered bodies are recurring themes. Aoshima blends collective anxieties with personal fears.

Aoshima often covers entire exhibition spaces, from floor to ceiling, with giant digital prints, immersing the viewer in her world of unsettling strangeness. Recently, she made an animated film to be projected across five screens, alongside a series of large sculptures.

Exhibition organised in collaboration with Kaikai Kiki Corporation (Tokyo) and Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris).
