Films, installations, photographs and videos produced by Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains.
Since it opened in 1997, Le Fresnoy, Studio national des arts contemporains, has been taking in 24 students from around the world every year. The teaching programme focuses on the interrelationship between disciplines, on producing works using professional means of production, and also, throughout the two-year course, on a move away from the traditional tools, media and languages of modernity – film, photography, video, sound and music – to the universe of contemporary technologies, multimedia and the digital arts. The teaching is imparted by a team of “guest teacher-artists”, selected from among leading artistic creators on the French and the international scene, and therefore the team is renewed regularly.

As well as the production aspect, Le Fresnoy is also a place for dissemination, holding exhibitions, screenings, workshops and lectures for the public. In June each year, all the work produced by the students and teacher-artists is displayed in one large exhibition. Videos, installations and interactive works are shown in the Le Fresnoy’s spacious premises, together with a programme of films and performances to complete this “Panorama”.

Making a selection from the hundreds of works produced over eight years has been very difficult. In order to be faithful to the spirit of the Espai 13, which is devoted to young artists, we considered the work of the teachers to be “offside”. We would have liked to have shown more of the works by the students, but it has not been possible. Rather than grouping the works in collective shows, we have preferred to select large-format installations and to present exhibitions on a single theme, which allows for a more in-depth approach to the artists’ work. Without pretending to demonstrate the full diversity of the Le Fresnoy productions, we hope we have managed to give an idea of their variety and quality.

We are most grateful to the Joan Miró Foundation for this opportunity to enable the young artists from Le Fresnoy to show their work in Barcelona.
