Le Corbusier Adventure, 1887-1965
The centenary of the birth of Charles Édouard Jeanneret (1887-1965), better known as Le Corbusier, is being celebrated throughout this year with numerous events and exhibitions around the world.
Clarity and order in urban planning, the interaction between housing, city and industry, machinism as the dominant criterion, cities nestled in greenery, flat roofs, buildings on pilotis or the creation of the brise-soleil are just some of Le Corbusier’s contributions that have achieved universal recognition.
The exhibition presents Le Corbusier’s work in its entirety. Given the interest of the works and documents on display, it can be considered the most complete tribute to the architect on the centenary of his birth.
The first part of the exhibition, at the Palau de la Virreina, tells the story of Le Corbusier’s training. This first section is dominated by his work in the plastic arts, providing a representative selection of the themes and techniques he cultivated throughout his life.
The second part, at the Fundació Joan Miró, begins with the period of L’Esprit Nouveau and focuses on Le Corbusier’s activity as a man of letters. His extensive architectural oeuvre is presented and examined thematically: techniques as the basis of lyricism, project strategies, innovation that integrates the avant-garde and tradition, the search for a harmonious scale on a human scale and so on. Each of these themes is illustrated by his most emblematic projects. The final chapter of the exhibition is dedicated to Le Corbusier as a town planner. It deals with his first formulated urban theories until arriving at his major projects.
The exhibition is organised by the Centre Georges Pompidou / Centre de Création Industrielle, in co-production with the city councils of Barcelona and Turin and in collaboration with the French Ministry of Culture and Communication, the French Ministry of Equipment, Logistics, Spatial Planning and Transport, and the Fondation Le Corbusier. The exhibition in Barcelona is sponsored by the Patronat Municipal de l’Habitatge, Caixa d’Estalvis de Catalunya, Winterthur Assegurances and the Col·legi d’Arquitectes de Catalunya.
